Fortune joined Atletico Madrid in 1996. Fortune signed for Manchester United on 1 August 1999 for a fee PS1.5 million. On 30 August, he made his debut for the club in a match against Newcastle United. He scored his first goal on Boxing Day 1999 against Bradford City and twice against South Melbourne during the 2000 FIFA Club World Championship.
