He played both as a defender and as a midfielder. After stints at Tottenham Hotspur and Mallorca, Atletico Madrid and Atletico Madrid, his career started in Europe. He settled down in Manchester United in 1999 and stayed there for seven years. He played until 2010. Fortune also played in the 2002 and 1998 South African World Cups.

Fortune joined Bolton Wanderers in 2006-07 after a successful trial.

On 4 August 2009, he signed a short-term deal at Doncaster Rovers. He scored his first Rovers goal against Ipswich Town on 19 September 2009. He was sent off in a 2–2 draw against Scunthorpe United. Fortune was not offered an extension to his deal at the club and was released on 4 February 2010.

Fortune joined Atletico Madrid in 1996. Fortune signed for Manchester United on 1 August 1999 for a fee PS1.5 million. On 30 August, he made his debut for the club in a match against Newcastle United. He scored his first goal on Boxing Day 1999 against Bradford City and twice against South Melbourne during the 2000 FIFA Club World Championship.
