From 1986 to 1989, Riggins was a member of the Auburn Tigers. In 1989, he was named team captain and led the Tigers to three consecutive SEC championships in his final three seasons. In 1988 and 1989, he was second-team All-American as well as first-team All-SEC. Riggins’ college career also included 398 tackles, 200 solo and 198 assists. Riggins was inducted into the SEC Football Legends Class 2009.
In June 1990, Riggins signed with Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the CFL. Riggins played for the Blue Bombers in the 1990 season and won the 78th Grey Cup. In 1991, he was a member of the Raleigh-Durham Skyhawks (WLAF).
