Hillsman was born in Suitland (Maryland). Hillsman is the son of Horace Jerome Hillsman (a computer business consultant) and Joan Rucker Hillsman (a music teacher). Hillsman graduated from Forestville High School and attended Johnson C. Smith University, Charlotte, North Carolina. He then transferred to St. Mary’s College of Maryland his sophomore year. He was third in assists (335) and eighth (130) with the Seahawks. He also set the school’s single-game assist and season record. Hillsman studied sports management at the United States Sports Academy after St. Mary’s. After sustaining a back injury, his playing career was ended and he decided to become a coach.

A Syracuse University athletic department spokesman stated that “[t]here was a misunderstanding with a previous accountant… Coach Hillsman is taking the steps to rectify the problem.” In 2011, the Hillsmans also owed $14,444 in back taxes, but that debt was later satisfied, according to the tax department.
