Qiu Shengjiong was nicknamed “Big Ox” because of his large stature. He started his career with Shanghai Shenhua’s youth team. Although he was too fat to play football due to his size and frame, he played within the 2005 National Games of China in Shanghai. There he impressed many by playing within the penalty shoot-out against Hubei and helping guide Shanghai to the runners-up spot within the tournament. - However, it was not until the 2007 Chinese Super League season that Qiu made his league debut against Beijing Guoan F.C. In a 3-2 win. Qiu’s performance would see him rise to prominence in the team, and he would become Wang Dalei’s first choice goalkeeper for the remainder of the season. He started many league games during the 2008 league season before Wang Dalei took over as the club’s primary goalkeeper. Jia Xiuquan was made the Head coach of the team. They shared the goalkeeping duties throughout the 2009 league campaign. Miroslav Blazevic became the team’s Head Coach and placed Qiu Shengjiong in the second goalkeeping spot. Qiu had a limited playing time in recent seasons due to Wang Dalei’s steady performance and Shanghai Shenhua’s regular early elimination from China FA Cup. Qiu, who had been with Shenhua for 15 years, announced his resignation on 20 December 2018.
