Qin Yongmin is one of the most popular and richest Human Rights Activist who was born on August 11, 1953 in Wuhan, People's Republic of China. Qin Yongmin (Chinese : Qin Yong Min ), born 11 August 1953, is a Chinese author and political commentator. He is also a human rights activist and cofounder of the Democratic Party of China.
Qin wrote an open letter to Jiang Zemin in 1997, requesting that the Communist Party of China implement political reforms in China to attain constitutional democracy. In 1998, he founded the Communication of PRC Human Rights Watch in Wuhan and published hundreds of reports about China’s human rights situation. Qin Yongmin also established the Hubei Province Committee of The Democracy Party of China in the same year. For “subversion to state power”, he was arrested and sentenced for 12 years.
Qin Yongmin was released from prison in November 2010. Undaunted, Qin continued his promotion of democracy and human rights in China. He was illegally detained numerous times.
At the end of another three years in detention, Qin was sentenced, in July 2018, to 13 years in prison for “subversion of state power”. While conceding that Qin had not engaged in any act of violence, the court listed his crimes: he had written articles and published a book in Hong Kong advocating a peaceful transition to democracy for China and had issued statements, organised pro-democracy groups and organised shared meals and meetings.
Qin was present at the launch of “Peace Charter” in Beijing, 14 January 1993. Qin was the author of the “Peace Charter”, which was the first program for a Chinese democracy movement since 1949. The charter called for redress for 1989’s suppression of Tiananmen Square protests and the release of political prisoners. Qin was convicted of the crime “disturbing society order” and sentenced for two years of reeducation via labor.

For decades, Qin was subject to imprisonment, arrest and criminal and administrative detentions, as well as labor and residential surveillance. He has argued that China should allow freedoms of expression, publication, association and exercise all fundamental human rights. He was detained or arrested 39 times between 1970 and 2012, sentenced to 22 years imprisonment, and became one of the longest-serving political prisoner in the People’s Republic of China. He stated that he would not leave China until the constitution is implemented.
Qin worked for Wuhan Steel Corporation. He edited and published “The Bell”, an Wuhan journal that promoted democracy at the end of 1970s. He was a member of “The preparatory team of the Democracy Party of China” in 1980. He was arrested in 1981 and sentenced to eight years in prison for “counter- revolutionary propaganda and incitement sin”. He was released in 1989.
In 1999, while incarcerated, Qin was elected as one of four co-chairmen of the Democracy Party of China. The same year, the United Nations Commission on Human Rights nominated Qin and DPC members Xu Wenli and Wang Youcai for the Nobel Peace Prize.
