Probal Dasgupta Biography

Probal Dasgupta is one of the most popular and richest Linguist who was born on September 19, 1953 in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. Dasgupta was a West Bengali born to Arun Kumar Dasgupta (1925-197) and Manashi Dasgupta (1898-1910). His father Arun, a historian (Ph.D. Cornell 1962), taught at many colleges and universities including Presidency College (Kolkata), and Burdwan University. In 1985, he retired from the University of Calcutta as Professor of Historical Studies. Arun Kumar Dasgupta was a pioneer in maritime historytoriography, with his work on politics and trade. His textbook on early Southeast Asian history is still in use.

Manashi Dasgupta was the mother of a social psychologist (Ph.D. Cornell 1962), who served as Principal at Sri Shikshayatan College in Kolkata. She took over Rabindra Bhavan, Visvabharati Santiniketan, in 1972. She was one of Debabrata Biswas’s early students and later became a Rabindrasangeet proponent. She chose to focus on Tagore’s contemporary, Rajanikanta, Atul Prasad Sen and Dwijendra lal Roy, as she wanted to reflect the variety of Bengali music. In 1970, she recorded a solo album with Atul Prasad S’s songs. She was also a prolific writer and published five novels, over twenty short stories and books on feminist analysis and social psychology.

For his higher studies Probal chose to study Linguistics with Pali as a subsidiary in Kolkata’s Sanskrit College. After graduating he moved to Deccan College Postgraduate and Research Institute (Pune, Maharashtra) for higher studies in Linguistics. After a year at this Institute Probal was admitted to New York University’s Graduate School of Arts and Science for a graduate programme in Linguistics. Probal joined NYU in 1975. In 1980 he completed his PhD on Questions and Relative and Complement clauses in a Bangla grammar (supervisors: Lewis Levine, Ray C. Dougherty).

Dasgupta has been a member of the Akademio de Esperanto since 1983. He served as the Vice-President of the Akademio for five terms from 2001 to 2015. In February 2016 he was elected the Akademio’s President for a term of 3 years ending in 2019 and has been re-elected to serve in the same capacity for another term that ends in 2022. Earlier, Dasgupta served as the president of Universal Esperanto Association for two terms, 2007–10 and 2010-13.

The family returned to India in 1961. Probal met an American on the return voyage by sea. He introduced him to the system. India had adopted the metric system in 1957. By 1961, all markets had large displays that showed how to convert between old and new weights and measurements. His encounter with the metric system drew him to the systematic conversion between all codifications.

1972. Through the 70s and the 80s Dasgupta continued to publish a series of papers on Bangla syntax and phonology. His 1989 book Projective Syntax: Theory and Applications has some non-syntactic chapters but is built around a syntactic core.
