Premakumar Gunaratnam Biography

Premakumar Gunaratnam is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on November 18, 1965 in Kegalle, Sabaragamuwa, Sri Lanka. Gunaratnam was the son of a Tamil mother and a Kegalle father on 18th November 1965. He attended St. Mary’s College in Kegalle and Pinnawala Central College in Rambukkana. Within a few months of entering the university, he was a student leader at the University of Peradeniya Faculty of Engineering. Although he did not finish his degree, his profession is listed as “Engineer”. He is married to Champa Somaratna (a Sinhalese doctor), who is a resident of Australia.

Dimuthu Attygalle was a former member of the politburo and is currently an active member. She was also the former head for the JVP women’s wings and party leader in several districts. Another ex-politburo member, Pubudu Jagoda, was active in the youth movement which includes the education wings. He was also a major contributor to the JVP newspaper, Lanka. Gunaratnam also supported the views of several student union leaders, including Udul Premaratne, Chameera Koswatte and Duminda Nagamuwa. Gunaratnam formed a new party called Frontline Socialist Party (FSP) with the dissident group in the same month.

Gunaratnam was detained in November 2015 after he arrived in the country with a tourist visa. After serving his sentence, Gunaratnam was released on December 2, 2016. He was granted Sri Lankan citizenship in February 2017. His Australian citizenship was then removed.

Gunaratnam was the Trincomalee leader for Deshapremi Janatha Viyaparaya in 1988-1989. He also served as the contact point between JVP and Tamil groups with a Marxist orientation, primarily the TELO. He was a well-known explosives expert and was allegedly responsible for the attack on Pallekele’s army camp and Kallar IPKF camp. Prema-kumar continued to operate under the name of his brother after Ranjitham’s death. He was taken into custody at Bogambara Prison and held there until he managed to escape by tunnelling his way from prison on 13/12/88. He fled the country via the sea route, as the military launched an investigation.

Gunaratnam was a mysterious leader, and JVP leaders denied that Gunaratnam was a member of the party as “Premakumar Gunaratnam”. The party’s internal crisis erupted in April 2012 between Gunaratnam, a hard-core socialist, and Somawansa Amarasinghe, the party leader. The party’s media unit was closed after Gunarathnam received the support of a majority. Gunaratnam has received support from the majority of students and youth wings, as well as the women’s wing.
