Pramod Tandon Biography

Pramod Tandon is one of the most popular and richest Botanist who was born on October 6, 1950 in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India. Tandon was born at Lucknow on 6th October 1950. He earned his BSc in 1969 from Lucknow University and his MSc in botany in 1971 at Lucknow University. In 1976, he received his PhD from Jodhpur University. He joined North-Eastern Hill University in 1977 as a lecturer, and later became vice-chancellor.

Tandon’s research has contributed to micropropagation, reestablishment of nature and recovery of critically endangered endemic plant species of Northeast India. His most recent research (2010-2015), focuses on genetic makeup of RET plant species. This information is important for planning conservation strategies. Tandon is a biotechnological engineer who has been working on Capsaicin biosynthesis enhancement in cell cultures of Capsicum Chilli (Naga King Chilli)

Tandon hosted the 96th Indian Science Congress at NEHU in January 2009.

Tandon was granted the National Scholarship for Study Abroad from Government of India and served as a postdoctoral fellow at the Department of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry, University of California, Irvine. Tandon served as a member of the National Advisory Council during 2010–14, where he worked extensively on development of northeastern region, a region facing many challenges including troubled history and geo-politics, environmental vulnerability and rough terrain, seclusion and insurgencies, poor infrastructure and weak governance, and limited connectivity.
