Porfirio Altamirano RAMIrez, born May 17, 1952, is a Nicaraguan former Major League Baseball right handed middle relief pitcher. He played for the Philadelphia Phillies (1982-83) as well as the Chicago Cubs (1984). In 1994, he was inducted into the Nicaragua Sports Hall of Fame.
Altamirano, despite not having a powerful arm, had a fastball of 87-92 MPH and occasionally a slider. Because he could pitch multiple innings at once, Altamirano was an ideal reliever in a bullpen by-committee. This allowed him to provide relief for a variety teammates, including Sparky Lyle, Tug McGraw, and Lee Smith.
On May 9, 1982, he made his major league debut and played 60 games in two seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies. He was traded to Chicago Cubs along with Gary Matthews and Bob Dernier in exchange for Mike Diaz and Bill Campbell. Altamirano’s three-year MLB career saw him record a 7-4 record, with 57 strikeouts and a 4.03 ERA. He also saved two runs. Altamirano also pitched 91.2 innings in 65 games.
