Pooja was born at Budana village in Hisar district, Haryana. Dhanda, the daughter of a tractor driver at Haryana Animal Husbandry Centre (Hisar), started out as a judo player at Mahabir Stadium. She switched to wrestling in 2009.
Pooja started her career as a young athlete when she won the silver medal in the 60kg category at the 2010 Summer Youth Olympics. She defeated Babita Phogat to make her debut in the 2013 national championship. She has won all four senior national championships since 2017. She has defeated Helen Maroulis, the Olympic and World champions of the USA, Odunayo Adekuoroye, the Olympic bronze medallist of Nigeria, and Marwa Amri, the World Championship silver and Olympic bronze medallists of the Pro Wrestling League.
