Farnerud was born and raised in Landskrona. After beginning his career at Landskrona BoIS as a 16-year-old, he was purchased by AS Monaco FC in 1999. He played in 15 Ligue 1 matches and helped the team win the 2000 national title. After spending the 2003-04 season in loan to RC Strasbourg, he returned to play six games in UEFA Champions League. He scored once in the league for a 2-1 victory against FC Nantes.
Farnerud, a Swedish international, was present in the 2-2 friendly draw against Greece on 13 February 2002. He played 29 minutes. Farnerud was a participant in the 2002 FIFA World Cup, and UEFA Euro 2004 but did not leave the bench.
Farnerud spent his two last seasons as a professional back in his homeland, with IFK Göteborg. In late 2013, he retired from the game due to a recurrent hip injury, but returned the following year with amateurs Glumslövs FF (seventh division).
