Pok Chi Lau (Liu Bo Zhi) is an Asian American photographer who was born in Hong Kong, April 21, 1950. He was the fifth child of seven children to his mother Kam Chu Kwang, and his father On Lau. At the age of 19, he moved to Canada. Lau is a professional photographer who works with the Chinese diaspora. Lau is currently an associate professor at the School of Fine Arts, University of Kansas.
Lau’s work includes Teen-ager’s Room in Johnson County, Kansas (1984), which highlights cultural changes and multiculturalism across the decades. Lau’s work has often been described as more similar to visual sociology or documentary than photography.

Lau was an elementary student at Tung Wah Benevolent elementary in Hong Kong. He attended Ying Wah College in 1964, where he discovered a passion for photography. Although he had intended to attend school at the Ontario College of Art in Canada, he was denied admission. He moved to California in 1971 to study at Brooks Institute of Photography. There he studied commercial, industrial and scientific photography. He was 26 years old when he became a graduate student at the California Institute of the Arts.
He is a professional photographer and focuses on the Chinese diaspora living in other countries. Pok Chi Lau is a professional educator as well as a professional photographer. In 1977, he was appointed Assistant Professor in the Department of Design at The University of Kansas. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 1983 and continued his work at The University of Kansas. He was awarded the title of Professor in 2004 by the Department of Design, which he still holds today.
Much of Pok Chi Lau’s work focuses on Chinese diaspora, multiculturalism, and displacement. Having himself moved from Hong Kong at the age of 19, this is something that was personally experienced. The specific impetus for his work however was the time he spent working in a restaurant in Nova Scotia, during which he saw his first Chinatown. Since this moment, Lau has spent much of his career doing documentary work of Chinatowns in North America. He focuses not on the touristy aspects of these communities, but on the real lives of those behind the scenes.
