Gupta began his career as a management trainee at Citibank India in 1982 at 22 years old. Gupta worked on several assignments at Citibank India and eventually became chief of staff to India’s head. He closed the venture and rejoined Citigroup in 2001. From 2002 to 2007, Gupta was the country officer in Malaysia. He helped build Citigroup’s branch network. In 2007 he assumed the position of country officer in Singapore and headed the Corporate and Investment Bank in ASEAN. Gupta was named the chief executive officer at Citibank in South East Asia and Australia in 2008. Gupta joined DBS Group in 2009 as chief executive officer.

Gupta has held several external positions, including being a member of Indonesia’s Debt Restructuring Committee and chairman of the Foreign Bankings’ Association in Indonesia. He also holds board positions on Kuala Lumpur Business Roundtable and the International School of Kuala Lumpur. Gupta is also the past chairman of US-ASEAN’s financial services committee. As the current deputy chairman of SPRING Singapore and as a member of both the Asian Bureau of Finance and Economic Research and the Group of Experts for the ASEAN Capital markets Forum, he is also the vice-chairman. Gupta is also a member of the Boards of The Institute of International Finance Washington, The Institute of Banking and Finance and Dr. Goh Keng Swee Scholarship Fund. He is also a member of the MasterCard Asia/Pacific Middle East and Africa Regional Advisory Board. Gupta is chairman of The Sim Kee Boon Institute for Financial Economics and a member of The Association of Banks Singapore. Gupta is also a member of the Managing Council of Indian Business-leaders’ Roundtable, which is part SINDA.

Gupta has changed the strategy of DBS to become an Asia-centric commercial bank in order to capitalize on the region’s growing megatrends. Gupta, speaking at the 2013 Institute of International Finance meeting, stated that banks receive a license not from the government, but from the civil society. It’s not enough to say we keep our shareholders and clients happy. Gupta believes that Digital Banking will determine the fate of the sector. According to Gupta, a Digital Strategy will make the difference between banks that survive and those that fail. Gupta urged his peers to embrace the new world order of technology at the Swift International Banking Operations Seminar (Sibos 2015) opening plenary. This is a world in which innovations like peer- to-peer and cloud computing are forcing banks to rethink how they do business and their infrastructures. Gupta said, “People talk about disruption but the word to use is transformation, which means that the incumbent can make changes.” All of us have the opportunity to lead the transformation and make a difference in the customer experience. We are the best people to accomplish this. He has spoken at various conferences and forums about how organisations can create a “university for talent” or grow their “own lumber” and the importance of diversity, including gender diversity.
