Pilato, also known as pilAto, is an acronym that stands for People in Lyrical Area Taking Over. PilAto was born and raised in the cooperbelt Province. He began his career as a poet at the age of 10, before moving into the music business in 2010. In 2010, poetry became his music. Pilato has three studio albums.
He recorded “Bufi”, a song featuring Petersen in 2013. It was a politically charged track that called President Michael Sata the “Father Of Lies”. He claims that he was threatened with death by supporters of the ruling party after the song received negative feedback. Pilato supported opposition leader Hakainde Haichilema in 2015 and performed at rallies across the country. He did not support Mr Hichilema, but the PF won the election. This was the closest election victory since Zambia. Plural politics was reverted back to the forefront. Six months later, he recorded a song from Nashil Pischen Kazembe’s 1970s hit “Aphiri Anabwela”, but he changed his lyrics to “Alungu Anbwela”. The musician was unapologetic and was charged with conduct likely to violate peace. The case was widely covered by the media, including coverage from outside Zambia. Pilato was bundled up and slapped with charges of conduct likely to breach peace.
Rumours circulated in 2013 that pilAto had been arrested for singing “Bufi” Pilato and Petersen sing in the song about broken promises such as cheap fuel, road construction and jobs for young people. They used words such as Boza, Bufi and Ulabeja to mean lies. Joyce Kasosa, Lusaka Police Chief, dismissed all reports that Pilato was detained for his latest song, Bufi. According to the police chef, no such incident was recorded by the police and Pilato remains a free citizen. Pilato then confirmed that he hadn’t been to any police station.
