Velthuizen signed for Spanish side Hercules in 2010 for EUR800,000. This was to help strengthen their squad for their return to the top flight following a 13 year absence. Calatayud was his second choice, and he made only 5 appearances in all competitions.

Velthuizen then moved on to Israel joining Hapoel Haifa. He was their main goalie as they finished in 8th place – their highest finish in 16 years.

On 17 July 2017, Velthuizen signed a contract with the Cypriot First Division club Omonia Nicosia where he would play alongside compatriot Hedwiges Maduro. He would end up cancelling his contract on 1 January 2018 after just 9 games.

Velthuizen was called up to the Dutch team for the friendly match against Austria on 21 March 2008. After being a substitute for Michel Vorm, Velthuizen made his national team debut in a friendly against Japan on 5 September 2009. In the 3-0 win, he kept a clean sheet. He is not currently part of the national football squad.

Velthuizen made the team debut in 2006 against Willem II, when he played in a 2-2 away match. His career grew quickly and Sky Sports ranked him among the top goalkeepers in Europe in 2008. In the 2007-08 season, he was able to break into the Vitesse team. After his only appearance of the 2015/16 season coming in a 4-1 extra time defeat to Heracles Almelo in a cup match in which Vitesse had to play the entire period of extra time with 8 men due to three sendings off, he departed at the end of his contract.
