Peter Andrew Shearer (born 4 February 1967) is an English former professional footballer who was an attacking midfielder or forward for various teams from smaller divisions in the Football League in the 1980s and the 1990s.

Shearer participated in a trial at Notts County in 1997 before joining Peterborough United as player-coach. He was a player for Peterborough’s reserve team. However, his only appearances in the team was three times as a substitute.

After some trials for trials with Coventry City and Dundee, Barry Fry brought Shearer back to Birmingham in January 1994, for a cost of £50,000. At first, he was not able to adjust, and was eventually transferred, however, during the 1994-95 season the player was able to establish himself. He played a significant role to the club’s win of their Second Division title and the Football League Trophy both with his determination and goalscoring and ten years later his name was mentioned in the Birmingham Evening Mail, discussing the development of Darren Carter, suggested that “Blues have not had a player capable of scoring goals in that manner from central midfield since Peter Shearer”. A surgical procedure to repair his tendon Achilles was a hindrance to him from playing in the final 2 games in which the club won the trophy, and he did not play for the team’s first team.

Shearer was born in Birmingham and started his career in football as a youngster at Coventry City. When he graduated from school in 1983, he became a member of Birmingham City as an apprentice and then signed his professional form within two years. The first time he made his debut in the Birmingham City team was at the age of 17, on the 3rd of November, 1984 as an unused substitute in a draw at home against Shrewsbury Town in the Football League Second Division. He was a part of the first team for four games in the same season, by the end of the season Birmingham were elevated to the top division and he made no more appearances. In April 1986, he became one of a number of players who were released due to financial trouble.

Shearer’s performance at Bournemouth was enough to warrant the possibility of a move for PS500,000 towards First Division club Wimbledon to be planned, however an injury to his knee ended his plans. in December of 1992 following the player’s recovery, Cheltenham manager Lindsay Parsons said Shearer could “be a Premier League player in a month”; Cheltenham Town would be paid one third of any money that was paid to Bournemouth in the event of a sale.
