Peter Hutton (born 2 March 1973) is a Northern Irish football coach and former player. He was a centre back and was a part of the 21 years at Derry City, and made an Derry City F.C. club record of 670 appearances within the League of Ireland. His father, named Peter played with Finn Harps in the 1970s.
He played the 1998 season with Portadown prior to his return back to Derry City. From 2001 to 2002, he was with Shelbourne where he also won a league title.
He was released after the 2009 season, and signed for Cliftonville in December 2009.
In May 2011, Hutton took over the management of League of Ireland First Division club Finn Harps, along with former Derry City teammate Felix Healy. Hutton was declared as the new manager while Healy took on the role of Director of football at the club. He went back to Derry City in November 2013, as an assistant to Roddy Collins. He succeeded Colins as manager the following year and managed the club’s highest record win in European competition with a 5–1 away win over Welsh outfit Aberswyth. Disappointment followed with a FAI Cup final loss to St Pats in 2014. Hutton agreed to depart in September 2015 after suffering a 3–0 defeat to Cork City in the quarter-finals of the FAI Cup.
He took part in trials at English club Tranmere Rovers, and Port Vale, and played two games in the summer tournament in 1995 for “Valiants” in 1995, before returning to Derry. He was captain of Derry to winning the League of Ireland title in 1996-97. While playing in midfield, he finished as Derry’s top scorer, scoring 19 goals.

He was a part of Oxford United Stars, Coleraine as well as Bradford City, before joining Derry City in 1990. In the following 19 years, the player played three times with Derry and won seven League of Ireland Cup titles and three FAI Cup titles, as in addition to winning the League of Ireland title in 1996-97. He was awarded as the PFAI Players’ Player of the Year as well as SWAI Person of the Year in 1996 and 1997. He also played brief games playing with Portadown and Shelbourne and was crowned his league championship with Shelbourne in 2001-2002. The end of his career came in 2011 after brief spells at Cliftonville as well as Finn Harps. He served twice at Derry as caretaker- manager. Then the club was managed by Finn Harps on a full-time basis from the year 2011 to 2013. He then managed Derry City from 2014 until 2015.
Hutton started his professional career as a player for Oxford United Stars in the Derry and District League, and later he played for Coleraine. At 15 years old, He was accepted into English Bradford City’s youth training program. This led to Hutton relocate into Bradford for a couple of summer months in between seasons, while being in Coleraine’s contract. In 1990, he was signed for his home team Derry City. Derry City made their League of Ireland debut for Derry on the 17th March of 1991. He scored his second goal in the 1995 FAI Cup final 2-1 success against the rivals Shelbourne on Lansdowne Road.
By November 2006, Hutton had made his 300th appearance as team-captain after a 1–0 League of Ireland final-night win over Cork City in the Brandywell Stadium. He made a total of more than 660 appearances for Derry City, a club record. He also managed Derry twice on a caretaker basis – in 2004 for a short period in the aftermath of Gavin Dykes’ departure and prior to the appointment of Stephen Kenny, and in 2007 following Pat Fenlon’s departure.
