Harper was born in 1974, the youngest child of a black father and a white Jewish mother, multi-instrumentalist Ellen Harper (nee Chase). They divorced when Peter turned two. the two brothers he had, Ben and Joel, were cared for with their mom. On Fridays and Saturdays she performed in a group and worked during the day at her parents’ music shop called The Folk Music Center, in Claremont, California. The store was a musical hub. It repaired and sold instruments, provided music classes, staged performances, and then in 1976 it opened a museum that showcased antique and rare instruments as well as folk art. Harper had no formal art education at school however, in the afternoons he spent time at the shop which was where he was exposed to all sorts of music, instruments, and musicians. He learned about repair of instruments and began making miniature ceramic art pieces. In his teens and early 20s, the guitarist tried his hand at however he was not satisfied with the instrument.
In August 2006, he joined California State University Channel Islands as instructor in art.
He continued to sculpt and teach, but focused increasingly on his music. In 2013, Harper released his self-titled debut album of eleven tracks. He made a solo tour of France in May 2016, playing 17 concerts in intimate venues, mostly in the southwest. A European edition of his first album followed in January 2017, with two additional tracks: an acoustic version of “Take it Home”, and an English-French bilingual version of “Can’t Stop Now”.
Harper was not a surfer before his brother Ben did it, and then reminisced about his experience. Peter had someone who surfs to take him on a surf trip and was immediately attracted. In the following days, while the time of filming the music video of Ben’s song from 2003 With My Own Two Hands, Peter met three brothers who were willing to let them surf “sometimes”, and invited Peter to join them. When he agreed it was immediately apparent that they were pros but it was only the following year that Harper realized that the three brothers, Chris, Dan, and Keith Malloy are famous surfers. It was largely through the Malloys that Harper was involved in the Surfrider Foundation. Chris Malloy was helping coordinate the auction of artwork for the environmental charity and asked Harper to take part. Harper transformed a surfboard into an art piece to benefit the charity. It was the first step in his dedication to environmental awareness.

Peter M. Harper (born in 1974) is an American musician, sculptor and academic. He is well-known for his voice and tenor guitar, particularly in France and Europe, where he has performed two concerts.
Harper was a student at Pitzer College in Claremont, where he studied studies in political science with a particular focus of his studies in the Third World. An experience abroad in Zimbabwe at the age of 19 years old was extended when being admitted into the Mzilikazi Arts and Crafts Centre located in Bulawayo. The centre provided him with intensive formal training in the art of figural sculpture. The following year, he went back to Pitzer where he completed the BA degree in the year 1996. He later earned the MA in art from New York University (NYU). After graduation, he moved back in Pomona, California, where he learned about mold making and bronze became his most- loved medium for sculpture. Through 2006, he exhibited approximately two shows a year, both in California as well as New York.
At a studio run by Sheldon Gomberg, he recorded a second album, Break the Cycle, with some of the musicians who tour with him in the United States as “Racing Alone”. The name of the group echos his conviction that people focus too much on competition, whereas the competition that matters is with oneself, to be better tomorrow than yesterday. He made a second European tour of 28 dates in January–February 2017, concentrated in France, but also including Belgium, England, Spain, and Switzerland. The tour was organized in conjunction with the Surfrider Foundation Europe, for which he formally became an ambassador. Break the Cycle was released in April.
