Peter Hain is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on February 16, 1950 in Nairobi, Nairobi County, Kenya. While his father was employed in the area, Hain was born in Nairobi in the former Kenya Colony, but he was transferred into South Africa to join the Union of South Africa when his parents returned around one year later. The family of his South African parents, Walter Vannet Hain and Adelaine Hain (nee Stocks), were militants against apartheid in the Liberal Party of South Africa who were declared “banned persons”, briefly in prison, and barred from working. Hain’s paternal grandparents were civil engineers Walter Vannet Hain of Dundee as well as Mary Hain nee Gavin of Glasgow were married in 1919. They left Shettleston, Lanarkshire, on 17 September 1920, on the Edinburgh Castle with their newborn baby William Ayers Vannet Hain, sailing from Southampton to South Africa. Hain’s father, who later went on becoming an architect was born in South Africa on the 29th of December 1924. Hain’s maternal grandparents are of the 1820 Settler British South African stock. The 4th Great-Grandfather of Hain was George Southey (1776-1831) who was from Devonshire. Hain comes from the daughter of George Southey, Sophia Stirk (nee Southey) and whose brother George was instrumental in tracking and kill Xhosa chief of the tribe Hintsa kaKhawuta (ca. 1790 – 1835). The brother of Sophia and George Southey was Sir Richard Southey who was who was a British colonial administrator and cabinet minister as well as a owner of land in South Africa. Hain is the fifth cousin six times removed of Poet Nobel Laureate Robert Southey.
In 1968 He became a part of in 1968 the Liberal Party and was elected as chairperson in 1971. He was then in 1975 the president of the Young Liberals, but in 1977, he switched to Labour. In the same year, he also became the first to establish the Anti-Nazi League and he remains an active advocate for Unite Against Fascism today. He is Vice-President of Action for Southern Africa.
Hain was educated in South Africa at Hatfield Primary School and Pretoria Boys High School and in London at Emanuel School, a state school, later becoming a private fee-paying institution, then Queen Mary College, University of London, graduating with a first class Bachelor’s degree in Economics and Political Science in 1973, and the University of Sussex, obtaining an MPhil. After university, Hain worked as a researcher for the Union of Communication Workers from September 1976, later rising to become their head of research.
Hain lives in Resolven in the Neath Valley. He married his first wife Patricia Western in 1975, and they have two sons. In June 2003, he married his second wife, Welsh businesswoman, Elizabeth Haywood, in Neath Register Office.
Joining in the British Anti-Apartheid Movement at aged 17 in 1967, by the time Hain was 19, he was chairperson of the Stop The Seventies Tour campaign which interrupted tours of teams from the South African rugby union and cricket teams in the years 1969 and 1970. In 1971 , director John Goldschmidt produced a film for the Granada’s World in Action programme featuring Peter Hain arguing about apartheid within South Africa at the Oxford Union. The film was aired via ITV. ITV network. In 1972, a private investigation led to Hain’s conviction on charges of criminal conspiracy in the Old Bailey for which he was sentenced to PS200. The prosecution was largely funded from whites who supported apartheid who resided in South Africa due to his campaign against the white-only South African sports tours. He was cleared of other conspiracy charges after defending himself during the trial of four weeks that was described in the book written by Derek Humphry, Cricket Conspiracy (1972).

Peter Gerald Hain, Baron Hain PC (born 16 February 1950) is a British Labour Party politician, who served as an MP (MP) of Neath in the period 1991-2015. He also was in the Cabinet for both Tony Blair and Gordon Brown. He was the leader of the House of Commons from 2003 to 2005 , the Secretary of State in Northern Ireland from 2005 to 2007 under Blair as well as Secretary of State to Work and Pensions and Secretary of State for Wales between 2007 and the year 2008, under Brown. He was a candidate for the post of Deputy Leader for the Labour Party, coming fifth from six candidates however, his inability to disclose donations during the election was the reason for his resignation in the year 2008. The following year, he was back in the Cabinet between 2009 and the year 2010 as Welsh Secretary. He was then appointed the Shadow Welsh Secretary for the Ed Miliband’s Shadow Cabinet from 2010 until 2012 after which the Welsh Secretary announced his retirement from politics on the frontline.
When Hain was a young boy, Hain was awakened in early hours of the morning by police officers who searched his room for ‘incriminating papers’. At the age of 11, he was awakened to learn that his parents were imprisoned for spreading leaflets to support Nelson Mandela’s campaign. They were released on bail after 14 days in detention. At the age of 15, Hain spoke at the funeral of John Frederick Harris, an anti-apartheid agitator who was executed for murder in connection with the bombing at Johannesburg’s Johannesburg Main Railway Station that injured 23 people, and also killed an elderly woman named Mrs Ethyl Rhys. The granddaughter of Mrs Rhys suffered serious burns. Hain along with his parents were strongly against the attack, but stood with Harris along with his wife Ann and son David and their family members. Due to security police intimidation, Hain’s father was not able to continue his career as an architect. the family that was deprived of income, was forced to flee to his home in United Kingdom in 1966.
In 1972, the South African Security Services were suspected of sending him a letter bomb that failed to explode because of faulty wiring. In 1976 Hain was tried for, and acquitted of, a 1975 bank theft, having been framed by the South African Bureau of State Security (BOSS) according to his 1987 book, A Putney Plot.

In 2001 Hain moved briefly to the Department of Trade and Industry before returning to the Foreign Office as Minister for Europe, being sworn of the Privy Council the same year. He was vocal in advocating joint sovereignty of Gibraltar with Spain and was accused of deliberately misrepresenting the situation. The agreement was described by Michael Ancram in the UK Parliament, along with Gibraltar as a ‘sell-out’ which was overwhelmingly rejected in a referendum in November 2002. He remains one of the most unpopular politicians ever to visit Gibraltar.
