Peter Dufka Biography

Peter Dufka is one of the most popular and richest Musicologist who was born on November 8, 1963 in Handlová, Trenčín Region, Slovakia. ThDr. PaedDr. Mgr. art. Peter Dufka, PhD, SJ (born on the 8th November 1963 in Handlova, Czechoslovakia now Slovakia) is a Slovak Roman Catholic priest, Professor at the Pontifical Oriental Institute in Rome, Radio Vatican co- worker and Pro-Rector of Collegium Russicum (since 31 January 2017).

He began his career at Vatican Radio on 2 August 1997, and was promoted to the editor. He was appointed the head of the Slovak Section in the month of November. In October of 2011 the lecturer was appointed at the university. As a result it was that he resigned from his leading post and was made an outside coworker. On Vatican Radio, he broadcast the weekly Rubric “The spirituality of contemporary man” and was a contributor in”The interview of the week “The interview of the week”.

He was ordained a priest on the 29th of June, 1996 at Bratislava in the presence of bishop Peter Dubovsky. His elder cousin, Juraj Dufka, was as well. In 1999 his older brother Vlastimil Dufka was granted Holy Orders. Three of the Dufka brothers are educated in the field of arts. After his ordination Dufka was employed as a pastoral assistant in Ruzomberok in the Exaltation in the Holy Cross church, as a helping priest and religious educator at Secondary Medical School. Since July 31, 1997, Dufka has been employed for the Slovak section of Vatican Radio. The Vatican Radio station returned him back to Slovakia at the end of 1999 and spent his pastoral-formative year at Presov’s Retreat House in Presov. After that, he went back to Rome again in 2000 , where he began theological studies in The Pontifical Gregorian University. Then, in 2002, he received his Licentiate in Fundamental Theology. He was at Rome until 2006, and then continued the pursuit of his Doctorate in Theology, and was awarded the degree in the year 2008. The same time he earned his Doctorate in Education from Ruzomberok’s Catholic University in Ruzomberok. From September to September, 2006, the priest served as a minister for The Sacred Heart Church in Kosice and was also the director of the “Michal Lacko” Centre of Spirituality East-West. In addition the church was also an adjunct professor in The Pontifical Oriental Institute in Rome. He was transferred back to Rome on November 9, 2009, where he was appointed the head of Vatican Radio Slovak section. He worked from there until the end of October 2011 until the time he joined The Pontifical Oriental Institute. He is still working on a regular basis with Vatican Radio and, at the moment, he’s the spiritual advisor for The Pontifical Nepomucenum College in Rome. Since 2013, he has taught in The Pontifical Gregorian University in Roma.

He is from a household with four children Three of them were priests. He was a student at Handlova’s Secondary Industrial School in Handlova during the period 1977-81. After finishing the school in 1981 he continued his studies at a different secondary school in the Conservatory in Zilina performing double bass. In 1985, while pursuing his studies at the Conservatory the student had begun the process of preparing for the priesthood within the Society of Jesus. From 2011 onwards, he has taught Byzantine music, aesthetics along with Christian spirituality at the Pontifical Oriental Institute in Rome As part of the spirituality that is spirituality of the Christian East, he has taught the following courses in the areas of Spirituality and Fundamentals as well as Prayer within the Christian East, Monasticism and the religious life, Distinction, spiritual combat, Spiritual support. Through the lectures and seminars that he gives, he is focusing on areas of beauty as an expression of faith and as a motivation for faith, aesthetic sense of the spiritual, Byzantine music. Additionally he supervises the licensing process dissertations and master’s theses.
