Child worked at Brandeis and was chair of MIT’s Department of Music and Theater Arts from 1996 until 1999.

Child was introduced to composition classes in the year 12 in the class of Bernard Barrell. He started attending Keele University in Staffordshire, England and then was transferred into Reed College in Portland, Oregon in 1973, as part of the junior year exchange program. He graduated with a BA in music from Reed in the year 1975. Child was then studying Kamatic musical instruments in Madras, India for one year through an Thomas J. Watson Fellowship. In 1978, he was awarded an opportunity to study at the Berkshire Music Center in Lenox, Massachusetts, where he learned from Jacob Druckman. In 1981, he was awarded his doctorate in musical composition through Brandeis University, where his instructors were Arthur Berger, Martin Boykan along with Seymour Shifrin.

Child writes music for orchestras, computer synthesis, chorus chamber ensembles, and vocal groups. His style of composition has been described as similar with Charles Ives, Benjamin Britten as well as Gustav Mahler. Some of his compositions include Embers (1984) which is a chamber opera in one act based on the play of Samuel Beckett, and Clare Cycle (1984) Four compositions based on the poetry written by John Clare.

He was the American Symphony Orchestra League – Meet the Composer “Music Alive” composer in residence with the Albany Symphony Orchestra from 2005 to

2008. Child wrote five new compositions for that orchestra, including Washington Park, a work inspired by the city’s Washington Park Historic District.
