In the spring of 2009, Petar Penchev was hired as manager at Botev Plovdiv and saved the team from being relegated. In his first year as manager, the initial team scored 5 wins and six defeats.
After his retirement Petar Penchev continues to play for the veterans of Botev Plovdiv. He was part of the team that won the championship in 2013.
Botev Plovdiv finished season 2014-15 on 6th place in A Grupa.
In 1996, Penchev was back in Botev Plovdiv and remained in the squad until 2000. Penchev is well-known among Botev Plovdiv supporters for his amazing score in the 80th minute in the dramatic 4-3 win over Levski Sofia on 6 December 1996.
