Pernilla Wiberg is one of the most popular and richest Alpine Skier who was born on October 15, 1970 in Norrköping, Östergötland, Sweden. Pernilla Wiberg (born 15 October 1970) is an Swedish former ski racer in the alpine and businesswoman. She raced in the World Cup circuit between 1990 between 1990 and 2002, when she was one of the few event winners. She has won the two Olympic gold medals and 4 World Championships and one World Cup overall award, she is considered to be one of the top alpine ski racers in the 1990s. At team level, she was a member of Norrkopings SK. Her birthplace was Norrkoping.
Her most successful season was 1996-97, when she won the title of ten World Cup races and took the overall, slalom as well as combined title. She surpassed the previous World Cup Overall winner Katja Seizinger by a whopping 500 points. In the slalom race, she was extremely dominant, winning 5 wins two silvers, one bronze, and a 4th place finish in 9 World Cup slalom races. She was the first woman to win a World Cup downhill in the World Cup finale weekend, being one of the first female athletes ever to take home World Cup races in all five disciplines. She also was the leader of on the World Cup Super G standings up to the end of the race and only needed a 5th-place result at the Super G on World Cup final weekend (with Gerg’s 2nd place finish) to win the season-ending Super G title. But, despite being on the verge of finishing in the 2nd or 3rd position and easily achieving this she veered off the course and was unable to claim all the season’s Super G crystal globe to Hilde Gerg. Wiberg rates her participation in the Super G her second best event, after the slalom, and her most favorite ski event however it is also in this event that she has experienced the worst luck and disappointment, with the 4th place finish she earned in Lillehammer and her mistakes at the 96 and 97 world championships and a terribly lucky to lose her Super G season crystal globe in the season of 97.
Wiberg was elected a member of the International Olympic Committee in 2002 and served an eight-year mandate until 2010. She was a member of the following commissions: Athletes’ (2002-), Sport and Environment (2002), Ethics (2003-), Coordination for the XXI Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver in 2010 (2003-), Nominations (2003-). On 2 September 2008, IOC announced that Wiberg would chair a commission appointed by the president of IOC, Jacques Rogge. The commission would analyse the projects of the shortlisted cities candidating for 1st Winter Youth Olympic Games.
Pernilla is today a member of the ‘Champions for Peace’ club, a group of 114 (as of 29 Nov 2018) famous elite athletes committed to serving peace in the world through sport, created by Peace and Sport, a Monaco-based international organization. Other Champions for Peace members include Ukrainian former pole vaulter, Sergey Bubka, British long-distance runner, Paula Radcliffe, and Serbian tennis player, Novak Djokovic.
Wiberg took home the giant slalom gold medal at the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville and the gold medal for combination in 1994 in Lillehammer. In both Olympics, Wiberg was the most successful Swedish athlete. In 1998, in Nagano she was awarded the silver medal in downhill; Wiberg is proud of this feat and considers it as the most impressive in her professional career. In her last Olympics in 2002, aged 31, she was unable make it to the top ten and placed 14th in the downhill, and placed 12th for super-G. The Olympic super-G was her last international race after the athlete announced retirement couple of weeks after, following surgery to her knees.
