Rathmann is a native of St. Paul, Minnesota She graduated from Minnesota’s University of Minnesota. She was a student of fine art, commercial art and the creation of children’s books with her studies in Chicago, Minneapolis, and Los Angeles. Her first novel, “Ruby the Copycat, earned Ms. Rathmann the ‘Most Promising New Author’ distinction in Publishers Weekly’s 1991 annual Cuffie Awards.” The book was then followed by her illustrations of Barbara Bottner’s Bootsie Barker Bites, and her self-illustrated Good Night, Gorilla, which was based on her experience with gorillas. Lieutenant Buckle as well as Gloria (1995) was awarded an Annual Caldecott Medal for U.S. Illustrations for picture books. Since then, she’s written two other books book titles, namely Ten Minutes until Bedtime as well as The day The Babies crawled away that made an appearance on the Horn Book Fanfare List of the top books of 2003.
