Pawan Karan’s third collection of poems “Aspatal ke bahar Telephone” (aka A Telephone outside Hospital) was released in 2009. The volume has been viewed in a different way from Karan’s previous published volumes ‘Iss tarah Main and ‘Stree Mere Bheetar’. In this volume , Karan’s vast understanding of family and society is exposed, though certain poems are focused on women. However, this volume presents society with such ease that it gives readers thoughts and ideas. The unique style of poetry created an impression on readers. Certain poems found their way in speeches by critics and readers. Readings were offered to readers such as Udhari Lal Alabama, Ristedar (Relatives), Mantri (Misnter), Pahalwan (Wrestler), General Dyer or Main (Me and Gen. Dyer), Ye Rasta Jaha Pahucahta Hai (Wherever this path leads), Hindu (Indian), Trianga (Indian ‘Tricolor’ Flag of India), Dulhe Ke Dost (Groom’s Friends) which was written against communalism. Stree Mere Bheetar has received numerous awards like – Vaagishwari Samman (2004), Pushskin Samman, Moscow (2006), Sheela Siddhantkar Samman (2007), Parampara Rituraj Samman (2009). The Marathi translation of this collection, “Stree Majhya Aat” has been included in the syllabus of Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam and ‘Nanded University, Maharastra’ and got an interpreter award ‘Anuvaad Puruskar’ of Gandhi Smarak Nidhi, Nagpur.
Karan began to move away from the social and religious views of his time in the process of forming and articulating the philosophy of feministism in his groundbreaking novel “Stree Mere Bheetar” in 2004.There are a few writers from India who have written about the condition of women’s rights within the Indian Society. Pawan Karan’s writing journey began around the year 1980 when his poem was published in an Indian newspaper. The publication ignited a passion in him to write poetry. Following that, he started writing poetry, contemplating poetry and then eventually writing poetry, but his poems took 10 years to be endorsed by the Indian poet society.
