Paulo Alexandre Rodrigues Fonseca (born 5 March 1973) is a Portuguese professional footballer who was a central defender and the manager of the Italian team A.S. Roma.
Fonseca started coaching as soon as he was leaving, spending the following two years as the head coach of Estrela Da Amadora’s youngsters. From 2007 until 2011, he was the coach of a variety of small teams that included C.D. Pinhalnovense which led them to the quarterfinals of the Taca de Portugal in both the 2010-11 and 2009-10 seasons.
Fonseca succeeded Vítor Pereira at the helm of back-to-back-to-back national champions FC Porto, signing a two-year contract on 10 June 2013. He started his spell on a high note, winning the year’s Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira after a 3–0 triumph against Vitória de Guimarães which marked his first honour as a coach.
From 2014 to 2016, Fonseca continued working in his country’s top flight, with Paços and Braga. He led the latter to the fourth position, also winning the domestic cup.
He scored Primeira Liga totals of 111 matches and three goals during seven seasons, most notably playing with Estrela da Amadora. He was appointed manager in 2005, and was notable for winning three times in the Ukrainian Premier League with Shakhtar Donetsk.

The family was born in Nampula, Portuguese Mozambique, Fonseca was a 14-year player as a senior player, starting with F.C. Barreirense at the bottom of the division before going straight to Primeira Liga with Leca F.C. during the 1995-96 season beginning in 21 games when Leca finished 14th and narrowly avoided being relegated. The following five seasons he was a regular in the second competition, playing first alongside C.F. Os Belenenses and C.S. Maritimo but it is only a backup that includes Vitoria S.C. along with C.F. Estrela da Amadora.
Fonseca quit in June 2005, aged 32 following a further four years with Estrela and three of them played in the second tier. In 2003-04, the player played in 15 games while the Lisbon team finished at the bottom of the league, which led to demotion.
In 2011–12, Fonseca was appointed at C.D. Aves in division two for his first job in the professionals, and he led the team to the third position, just two points shy of promotion. In the following campaign he signed for F.C. Paços de Ferreira, again finishing third to qualify the club for their maiden campaign in the UEFA Champions League; highlights included winning both games against S.C. Braga (2–0 at home, 3–2 away) and Sporting CP (1–0 on both occasions).
