To be eligible to participate in the 1992 Barcelona Games, the Australian team needed journey from Stoke Mandeville in England to get there. The qualifying event required that the team be able to beat France in addition to Japan. The team from the national side managed winning the event and qualified for participation in the Games. In the Barcelona Games, the Gliders came in fourth place.

She was part of the Australia women’s national wheelchair basketball team (Gliders) at four Paralympics: the 1992 Barcelona, 1996 Atlanta, 2000 Sydney, and 2004 Athens games. She was a member of the Gliders team that won silver medals in 2000 and 2004.

The Sydney 2000 Games was a major turning point for paralympic sport. There was a stronger connection between the paralympic athletes and the able-bodied athletes, and Coghlan’s public profile had increased. The Gliders had been undefeated and had reached the gold medal play off against Canada, but they were defeated.

One of the highlights for Coghlan was his wearing the gold and green colors in the 1992 Barcelona Games because it was the first time that Australia was represented in wheelchair basketball by women.

In 1987 Coghlan was a victim in a car crash in which the driver was asleep in the driver’s seat. The car was then flipped over onto its roof and her foot was sucked in the vehicle. After a failed attempt to try to rebuild her leg with surgical procedures, Coghlan eventually made the choice to remove her below knee.

Coghlan quit the Australian team following her participation in the 1992 Games to have her son, James. The coach of the Gliders, Peter Corr, invited her back to participate for her first 1996 Games in Atlanta. In Atlanta, at the Atlanta Games the Gliders placed fourth. In 1997, at the World Championships, the Gliders were awarded the bronze medal.

She competed as Paula Lohman at the 1992 Games and at the 1996 Games she competed as Paula Ewen. She has two sons James and Jacob. She was the domestic partner of wheelchair basketballer Sandy Blythe for eight years until his suicide in 2005. After his death, she took up a directorship for the Blythe- Sanderson Group.
