Begoun was born in the suburbs of Chicago, Illinois. When she was a kid, Begoun suffered from acne and eczema. She attended science classes in Northern Illinois University before moving to Washington D.C. in 1978 to become an experienced cosmetic artist as well as an esthetician. Begoun later moved to Washington and began to open her own cosmetics store within Seattle in 1981. She then added an investor just a few months later. The year 1982 saw KIRO-TV situated in Seattle, Washington provided Begoun an opportunity to work as a feature/consumer reporter and she started writing about the industry of beauty in the form of an investigative reporter. The following year, she began work on her first novel, Blue Eyeshadow Should be Illegal.

The book received the attention of the entire nation, culminating with the debut appearance of Begoun on the Oprah Show. Begoun also started publishing a syndicated blog entitled “Dear Paula,” and received thousands of emails from women all over the country wanting specific information on various cosmetics. These requests prompted Begoun to create Don’t go to the Cosmetics Counter Without Me. The first edition of the book was released in 1992.

Previously, Begoun has run a podcast with topics centered on cosmetics, skin and hair care. The show also covered current beauty industry news, “myth- busting”, best and worst products, and hosts special guests including dermatologists and cosmetic surgeons. Listeners are invited to call in with questions for Begoun or her co-hosts, and each show includes product giveaways to callers. As of 2013, the radio show is on an indefinite hiatus.
