Paul Vallely’s autobiography Pope Francis – Untying the Knots investigated the allegations that were made against Pope Francis when he was Fr Jorge Mario Bergoglio, leader of the Jesuits in Argentina during the “Dirty War” conducted by the Argentine military dictatorship during the 1970s and 1980s. Vallely determined that Bergoglio did not actively commit the betrayal of the two priests of Jesuit order, Franz Jalics and Orlando Yorio and Orlando Yorio, to the hands of a death squad from the military according to what some critics suggested. But he also concluded that in the case of both priests “Bergoglio behaved recklessly and has been trying to atone for his behaviour ever since.”. “Vallely produces evidence to show that Bergoglio, in those years, did set up an escape route for those escaping the military death squads which saved a significant number of people.”
In 2004/05, Vallely was co-author on The report by the Commission for Africa set up by Tony Blair, the British premier, Tony Blair, of which Bob Geldof was a member. Vallely ghost-wrote the autobiography of Geldof entitled is That It? in 1985. He also was a travel companion along with Bob Geldof across Africa to decide on how to spend the money raised through Live Aid and was involved in the organising of Live 8.
In 2008 he was shortlisted for the Orwell Prize, the pre-eminent prize in Britain for political writing.
He has worked for many British national newspapers including The Times, Daily Telegraph, Sunday Correspondent, Sunday Times (where he edited the News Review section), Independent on Sunday (where he was executive editor and then a weekly columnist) and The Independent where he was a leader-writer. Until April 2013 he was associate editor of the UK newspaper The Independent. He still writes about ethical, cultural and political issues in the Independent on Sunday. (He was once referred to by Peter Wilby in New Statesman as “the Independent’s resident saint”). He is also a columnist for The Church Times and Third Way Magazine. He is a director of The Tablet. As a freelance he has written for The Independent, Sunday Times, the Guardian, the New York Times, the Church Times and Third Way magazine.
Vallely has been chaired or active in many important UK aid organizations, including Traidcraft and The Catholic Institute for International Relations (CIIR which is now known as Progressio), Christian Aid and CAFOD. He was an advisor for his fellow Catholic bishops in England as well as Wales as well as the co-author of two reports for them “Catholic Social teaching and the Big Society” and”A Place of Reconciliation: A Christian approach to the issue of punishment and prison.
