In a speech before in a speech to the State Senate in July 2015, Thurmond called for the Confederate flag to be removed permanently out of the premises at the State House. The call was prompted by the shooting that occurred at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal church in Charleston that took place just a month before when nine people–including Thurmond’s coworker Clementa Pinckney were killed. The murder was committed by the white extremist Dylann Roof, who was prominently displayed the flag.

Thurmond was a candidate for the South Carolina Senate in 2012 to represent the district of 41st. The seat was taken from the seat by Glenn F. McConnell, who became the Lieutenant Governor in South Carolina. Thurmond won over Walter Hundley, who succeeded McConnell in an election that was held during July of 2012. Thurmond was the winner of the general election by defeating Paul Tinkler, a Charleston City Councilman who is a member of the Democratic Party, on November 6 in 2012.

In 2006 the year he got elected as a Charleston County council. While he initially announced that his retirement from politics in 2009, and decided not to seek a second terms as councilman Thurmond was able to stand for an open post on the United States House of Representatives in the 1st congressional district in South Carolina in the wake of Henry E. Brown, Jr.’s retirement in the year 2010. Thurmond was third during his Republican primary, which forced the runoff vote in the race against Tim Scott. Scott beat Thurmond during the second round of runoffs.

Thurmond did not seek re-election in 2016. The American Conservative Union gave him an 88% evaluation and the Club for Growth gave him a 90% evalution.
