Paul Edward Maguire (born 21 August 1956) is a Scottish former soccer player with 81 goals during 373 league games within the Football League. He played in the four divisions of Football League, as well as the Conference and the Major Indoor Soccer League.
Maguire came back to England and signed with Port Vale, Stoke’s Potteries rivals in the derby of June of 1985. Maguire played regularly in the team and scored thirteen goals (including five penalty shots) in 57 games to assist players from the “Valiants” to win promotion from the Fourth Division in 1985-86. Director John Rudge gave Andy Jones the responsibility of taking penalties in 1986-87, however Maguire managed to score nine goals over the course of 52 games, helping Vale to a respectable mid-table place at the top of the Third Division. Maguire was sacked in December 1987, and following the scoring of five times in 34 contests during 1987-88, he was granted the option of a transfer to Vale Park in May 1988. He was a part of the nearby Conference club Northwich Victoria as the player-assistant manager. Later, he was promoted to the manager of the player-caretaker, before stepping down from the sport. Later, he was employed as sales representative.
Maguire was signed by Stoke City in 1980 for the sum of PS262,000, and were run by his former manager Alan Durban. After a series of injuries hampered his debut year in the Victoria Ground, Maguire established himself on the left wing with a string of goals, as well as becoming known as a dead-ball expert. Maguire scored seven goals over 37 games with Stoke’s “Potters” in 1981-82, helping keep Richie’s team two positions and two points ahead of that First Division relegation zone. He scored five goals in 25 games between 1982 and 1983, while Stoke was a respectable 13th. The most prolific scorer for the club in 1983-84 with ten goals over 38 games. The club was originally Scottish junior club Kilbirnie Ladeside, Maguire joined Shrewsbury Town in 1976. They “Shrews” finished tenth and eleventh in the Third Division in 1976-77 and 1977-78 under the stewardship of Alan Durban. Graham Turner then led the team up the ranks in 1978 and 1979 although they finished only two points higher than fourth-place Gillingham. 13th place within the Second Division followed in 1979-80. Maguire was a part of his first Welsh Cup Final, which culminated in an aggregate loss of 5-1 in the hands of Newport County. At the time, he owned two Welsh Cup winner’s medals to his name.
