Paul James Kingsman MBE (born 15 June 1967) is a professional swimmer as well as an Olympic medallist from New Zealand. He was a participant at the 1988 Summer Olympics where he won the bronze medal in the 200-meter backstroke. He also participated in the 1984 Summer Olympics.

Kingsman ended his career by getting a bronze medal and a silver at his 1990 Commonwealth Games in his home town of Auckland, New Zealand. He was a popular athlete and his departure from the Games at Auckland was a moment of emotion. In the Queen’s birthday celebrations of 1990 Awards, Kingsman was awarded an MBE for his contributions to swimming.

The 21-year old entered 1988’s Olympic Games the 20th fastest backstroker on the planet over 200m. He was a finalist and competed in lane one. Kingsman’s performance was rewarded with a bronze award during the last few strokes. The time of 2:00.48 that set the new Commonwealth record is the longest-running time in New Zealand swimming at 20 years old (broken the record in 2008 Kent Basset). Kingsman was the first New Zealand male Olympic medalist in a swimming competition for an individual.

In his career as a swimmer In addition to the Olympic gold medal Kingsman has also won the following four Commonwealth Games medals and twelve New Zealand national senior titles. Kingsman was trained throughout all of New Zealand career by coach Hilton Brown. At the age of 15, he was selected to compete in the 1982 Commonwealth Games team, making the 200m final in Brisbane, Queensland. He was considered to be the oldest Kiwi to ever participate in his first Commonwealth Games.

At 17 years old at the age of 17, he was a part of Gary Hurring in representing New Zealand in the 1984 Summer Olympics swimming backstroke and was 10th for the 100m. At the 1986 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh, Kingsman’s performance was good enough to secure him two silver medals in the 200m and 100m backstroke. In the same year, he was awarded a scholarship at University of California, Berkeley. University of California, Berkeley in which his swimming got an edge of competitiveness under the guidance under the coach Nort Thornton.

On retiring from swimming, Kingsman took up a position as New Zealand national sales and marketing manager for Speedo sportswear. He then set up and operated his own swim school in Auckland. In 2001, he moved to the San Francisco Bay Area with his wife and son and currently lives in Greenville, South Carolina, where Kingsman is a financial advisor and also a professional motivational speaker and executive coach to the financial services industry.
