Paul Hill was born in Miami, Florida on February 6, 1954. He was the son of Oscar Jennings Hill, an airline pilot as well as his spouse Louise. He grew up within Coral Gables. Hill was accused of assault at 17 by his father when his father tried to seek treatment for Hill’s addiction. Hill claimed he had an enlightenment experience two years later, in 1973, following being transferred to a military school. Hill then enrolled at Belhaven University where he met his wife of a lifetime, Karen Demuth, with whom he was to have three children.

After his arrest Hill was tried at the Circuit Court of Florida for the First Circuit, charged with two counts of premeditated murder in the first degree, one count of murder and the other count was attempted murder and one count of shooting at an unoccupied vehicle. Hill tried, and succeeded, to to appear in court pro se. i.e. Hill was able to represent himself. He was found not guilty on every count. Hill’s request to invoke an affirmative defence of justifying his actions was rejected. According Hill, according to Hill that his actions were a defensive move not a form of revenge. On the 6th day of December 1994, Hill was found guilty of the charges and sentenced to die. Appeal appeals made to the First District Court of Appeals 656 So.2d 1271 (Fla. 1995) as well as later appeals to the Florida Supreme Court, 688 So.2d 901 (Fla.1996) but were not successful. Hill filed a petition to in the Supreme Court of the United States to issue a writ of certiorari (asked the Court to consider the appeal). The petition was rejected. 522 U.S. 907 (1997).

While in police custody, Hill told the media “Now is the time to defend the unborn as to defend a slave that’s about to be murdered.” Hill’s purported ties to the Army of God movement as well as his life and crimes are explored in the feature length HBO Documentary film Soldiers in the Army of God (2000) directed by Marc Levin and Daphne Pinkerson as part of HBO’s America Undercover Series.

The execution warrant for Hill was not signed until July 2003, at which time it was signed by Governor Jeb Bush. Hill died by lethal injection in Florida State Prison on September 3, 2003, aged 49. His last words were, “If you believe abortion is a lethal force, you should oppose the force and do what you have to do to stop it. May God help you to protect the unborn as you would want to be protected.”

Before the killings Hill made two position documents in response to Reconstructionist the author Gary North, which set the views of Hill on abortion, and the reasons he believed that killing abortionists justified. The documents are followed by 3 more letters addressed to North on October 24, 1994. North’s replies, sent after the murders, contained two letters made public. The letters rebutted and rejected Hill’s theological arguments and concluded that “…the public would view your double assassination as an action of a condemned person who is not a member of the church of God and doing it by himself in defiance of the Bible’s revealed law, and the moral code of God.”

Paul Jennings Hill (February 6 1954 – September 3 2003) was an American minister and anti-abortion extremist who killed doctor John Britton and Britton’s bodyguard who was former Air Force Lieutenant Colonel James Barrett in 1994. Hill was condemned to death through lethal injection, and executed on September 3, 2003.

Hill was a graduate of Reformed Theological Seminary, where he was a student of Greg Bahnsen, a founder of the right-wing Christian Reconstructionist movement. He was a member of St. Paul Presbyterian Church where theonomy was a central tenet of an ideology that was closely linked to Reconstructionism. After the ordination ceremony in 1984 Hill was ordained a minister to as well his church, the Presbyterian Church in America and the Orthodox Presbyterian Church. Hill was disqualified in 1993 in the wake of a string of national telecasts where Hill said he was the current public spokesperson of “defensive action” against abortion providers. On July 29, 1994, Hill approached the Ladies Center, an abortion clinic in Pensacola, Florida. When he spotted clinic doctor John Britton and his bodyguard, retired USAF Lieutenant Colonel James H. Barrett. outside the clinic, he fired on both of them at close range with a Mossberg Model 500A 12-gauge pump-action shotgun. Both Britton and Barrett died; Barrett’s wife, June, was also wounded. Following the shots, Hill laid his shotgun on the ground and waited to be arrested.
