Hinshelwood was released from Palace in 1983 and moved into Oxford United. In Oxford, he took home the Third Division title for the first time (Palace had only risen to third). He was then moved back to south London, to Millwall which he received promotion to Division 2. He was then transferred for a modest sum together alongside Nicky Chatterton to Colchester United and then transferred into non-league teams Basildon United, Dartford and Chelmsford City.

“Doris”, as he was referred to by fans, despite his nickname in the dressing room”Fish” was “Fish”, originally began as a striker but did not perform well in that role. In November of 1976, Hinshelwood switched to playing as a right- back. Alongside his future England left-back Kenny Sansom, he shored up the Palace defence. The team was promoted twice over three seasons before reaching the First Division in 1979. In the 1979 campaign, Hinshelwood only missed one game as Palace were crowned champions.

Paul Hinshelwood (born 14 August 1956 located in Bristol, England) is an English retired footballer who played in the Football League for Crystal Palace, Oxford United, Millwall and Colchester United. He earned honorary status as a representative with Colchester United, the England under-21 team. He also managed and played for non-league soccer. His children Adam and Paul Jr were also professional footballers.

Hinshelwood was raised in Croydon and in the year 1969, he and his brother Martin was a participant at the semi-final of the London FA Schools Cup, which was watched by the former Crystal Palace manager Arthur Rowe. Rowe was impressed and the pair were invited to play for the club. Both did well and were then accepted as apprentices.

In 2005, Paul was named in Palace’s Centenary XI.
