Paul Jeffrey Haynes III (born on July 11 1969) is a American basketball coach from college and a former athlete. He is the cornerbacks coach of the Minnesota Golden Gophers and the former head coach of football for Kent State University, a job that he held for five years. Haynes was previously the assistant coach on high school professional, professionally and at the collegiate level for a period of 20 years, which included times as the defensive coordinator for Ohio State University and the University of Arkansas. In the past, prior to beginning his coaching career Haynes was a four-year defense back who played in the varsity team in the Kent State University football team Kent State between 1987 and 1991.

From 2005 until 2011 Haynes was the defensive backs’ head coach for Ohio State under Jim Tressel (2005 until the year 2010) as well as Luke Fickell (2011); Haynes also was defensive coordinator for the year 2011. In this time, Ohio State finished in the annual top ten in the AP Poll every season from 2005 to 2010 and was third at the BCS National Championship Game after the 2007 and 2006 seasons.

In February 2020, he was hired as cornerbacks coach at the Minnesota.

As of 1999, Haynes was back at Kent State to join Dean Pees’s coaching staff as defensive backs coach. Haynes was the safety coach and was promoted to assistant coach the following season. Haynes was offered the initial NFL position in the year 2001, as the defensive quality control coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars under Tom Coughlin before returning to college in 2002 as a defensive backs ‘ coach in Louisville in the direction of John L. Smith. When John L. Smith was appointed the head coach at Michigan State in 2003, Haynes moved to the state and was a defensive backs coach.

The family was born in Columbus, Ohio, Haynes graduated from St. Francis DeSales High School, where he played basketball, football and track at high school. After graduating in 1987, Haynes attended Kent State University that year and was a part of join the Kent State Golden Flashes football team as a defensive defender. He also played the most in the team’s interceptions in his first season, which saw Kent State finished 7-4 (5-3 and ranked second within the MAC). The 1989 season was cut short due to knee injuries, Haynes earned letters for the 1988, 1990 and 1991 seasons. On December 18, 2012, Kent State hired Haynes as its 21st head football coach. Haynes was fired after the 2017 season, finishing his tenure with a record of 14–45 overall, 9–30 in conference play. Shortly following his tenure with Kent State, Haynes was hired as defensive backs coach at Michigan State.
