Hardin obtained his B.S. in biology from Southern Methodist University (SMU) in 1982. Then he continued to pursue the Ph.D in genetics at Indiana University in 1987 with William H. Klein. He continued to pursue postdoctoral research in Brandeis University under the supervision of the chronobiologist Michael Rosbash. From 1991 until 1995, Hardin was an assistant professor of biology at Texas A&M University, and from 1995 until 2005 , he was a professor at the University of Houston. From 2005 onwards, Hardin has worked as a researcher and professor in the department of biology in Texas A&M University.
