Christopher Paul Farrelly (born 2 March 1962) is a British Labour Party politician, corporate banker, and financial journalist. He is the MP (MP) of Newcastle-under-Lyme from 2001 until the year 2019.

Farrelly was educated at Wolstanton Grammar School (which later became Marshlands Comprehensive High School) on Milehouse Lane in Newcastle-under- Lyme. He attended St Edmund Hall, Oxford where he received an undergraduate degree in Philosophy as well as Economics, Politics and Economics at the age of 1984. Following his studies and work experience, he was employed at a management level in the finance department at the company Barclays de Zoete Wedd, and then, in the year 1990, was hired by Reuters as a reporter as well as news editor. He was named the deputy business editor for The Independent on Sunday in 1995 before being appointed to The Observer in 1997 as the City Editor. There the editor remained until his appointment to Westminster.

Farrelly was selected to contest his hometown seat of Newcastle-under-Lyme following the retirement of the Labour MP Llin Golding at the 2001 general election, and he held the seat comfortably with a majority of 9,986. He made his maiden speech on 12 July 2001. In the House of Commons, he served on several select committees including the Science and Technology Select Committee and, from the 2005 general election, the Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee.

One described how her boss, a senior clerk still working at the House, had told her: “Mr Farrelly was known to be an awful man, or words to that effect, and that he had previously made the lives of female members of staff …very difficult”. An internal report into his conduct found his behaviour amounted to “an abuse of power or position, unfair treatment and undermining a competent worker by constant criticism”. A formal inquiry into the allegations was blocked by MPs and Farrelly called the accusations ‘baseless’.
