Lorence (February 17 1955 – April 15th 1986) was a Weapon Systems Officer (WSO) died when the F-111F fighter bomber with tail number 389 as well as the callsign Karma 52 was shot down in an incident near on the shores of Libya on the 15th of April 15, 1986.
On April 14, 1986, as a reaction to terrorist acts that were then believed, and later verified, to be funded through Libyan head Colonel Gaddafi specifically that 1985 Berlin discotheque bombing on April 6 – and in the backdrop of increased tensions and clashes between Libyan as well as U.S. navies over the controversial Gulf of Sidra, the United States launched a surprise attack on the targets of Tripoli and the rest of Libya. The United States was not able to convince France nor Spain would have a problem with U.S. military aircraft overflying on their territory, therefore they had to use the USAF F-111F fighter-bombers taking off from American bases in Britain were forced to take an oblique 1300-mile turn to follow an Atlantic coast , before cutting through the Mediterranean through in the Straits of Gibraltar and Portugal to launch their assault on Libya. A further six F-111F aircraft were been launched at RAF Lakenheath as airborne spares in case of any malfunction. After a certain time in the flight, the six aircraft returned to their home station. Furthermore the 18 F-111Fs had been taken through the air by EF-111A Raven Radar Jamming aircraft which was launched at RAF Upper Heyford, United Kingdom. A number of Airborne KC-135 or KC-10 tanker aircrafts were part of the longest combat mission as well as various other aircraft supporting. This group of aircraft that left from the United Kingdom bound for Tripoli, Libya, was part of a coordinated strike operation with US Navy aircraft going after specific targets located in Benghazi, Libya, on the same night.
On December 25, 1988, Gaddafi offered to release the body of Capt. Lorence to his family through Pope John Paul II. But the body that was eventually handed over was identified by dental records as that of Capt. Ribas-Dominicci. According to the U.S government, Libya denies holding Lorence’s remains.
Family members have led an ongoing campaign to recover Lorence’s body. In 1996, Lorence’s childhood friend Theodore D. Karantsalis, a public records librarian, started another campaign to retrieve the body by April 15, 2006, the 20th anniversary of his death. On November 17, 2006, the federal government declassified and released details of Operation El Dorado Canyon to Karantsalis pursuant to a lawsuit styled Karantsalis v. Department of Defense filed in Miami, Florida.
Their names Lorence and Ribas-Dominicci have been engraved inside the F-111 “Vark” Memorial Park located in Clovis, New Mexico. Both Lorence and Ribas- Dominicci received the Purple Heart and Ribas-Dominicci was posthumously elevated to the rank of Major effective on 15 April 1986.

On April 14, 1986, the United States launched Operation El Dorado, an Air Force bombing raid into Libya in response to terrorist attacks. During the raid, Capt. Lorence and his pilot, Capt. Fernando Ribas-Dominicci, were shot down off the coast of Libya becoming the only casualties of the entire operation. Capt. Ribas-Dominicci’s body was eventually returned by the Libyan government in 1989, however the location of Capt. Lorence’s remains is still currently unknown.
