Burstow first ran for the Sutton as well as the Cheam Parliamentary seat of his party, the Liberal Democrats at the 1992 General Election. His campaign was unsuccessful, however. In 1988 when he was a member of his first membership in the Association of Liberal Democrat Councillors as a campaign manager; the next year, he was elected as its political secretary in the year 1996 which he held until he was elected an MP.
