Paul James Barry (born 24 February 1952) is an English-born native of Australia, a journalist, newsreader and television host, who has been awarded numerous accolades for the quality of his reporting. Barry previously worked for the BBC in a variety of shows, before moving to Australia.
In 2001, Barry published his first book titled Going for Broke – How Alan Bond Got Away with the Crime. The following two years Barry was a writer his columns for The Sydney Morning Herald, getting another Walkley Award exposing a tax fraud involving prominent barristers from Sydney. He was an Walkley Award judge as well as on an earlier Walkley committee. He also co-authored an autobiography, Rich Kids, documenting the fall of One.Tel. In 2004, he joined Nine Network. Nine Network to work as an investigative reporter on 60 Minutes. In February of 2011, Alan Bond published a response to an essay written by Barry in December of 2010 regarding Bond’s involvement in Global Diamond Resources Plc.
During October 2009, Barry was the subject of criticism from Australian business identities for his 2009 unauthorised biography of media and gambling mogul James Packer. The book details relations between the younger Packer and his father Kerry, citing anonymous sources as stating the pair had a difficult relationship, and that James was “relieved” by his father’s death. Business leaders and friends of the Packers including former Nine Network CEO Eddie McGuire and mining tycoon Andrew Forrest defended James Packer. Upon launching the book, Barry dismissed the criticism, calling the book “fair” and “considered”.
Barry has been a contributor to Crikey, an online magazine published by Private Media (in which he has a minority share). He joined Crikey in December 2010, and was given around A$152,000 (equivalent to $170,454 in 2018) worth of new shares of Private Media in June 2012. In August 2011 Barry was appointed as a senior writer at Private Media’s The Power Index, “a free website [which] offers daily news, views and features about power and influence in Australia.”
As of 1995 Barry was a part of the Seven Network for a short-lived news program called The Times. He later became the host for the daily current events show Witness during 1997. He returned to ABC as host of the Media Watch show in the year 2000. He was then effectively dismissed from the program by ABC director Jonathan Shier after a controversial interview with ABC chairman Donald McDonald on the subject of funding from the government in the ABC. In August 2010, however, Barry acted as Media Watch’s temporary host for three months, while Jonathan Holmes took long-service leave.

Barry began his journalism career in London in the role of an economics correspondent for Investors Chronicle. In 1978 Barry was hired by his first job at the BBC in the role of a journalist on The Money Programme, Newsnight and eventually Panorama. From 1987 until 1994 Barry was an investigative reporter on the ABC’s top current affairs program Four Corners specialising in economic problems, government departmental failures and the corporate governance of corporations. A series of articles on the disgraced billionaire Alan Bond (and his company Bond Corporation) brought his work to national attention in 1993. The author also wrote”The Rise and Fall of Alan Bond as well as a TV documentary regarding the Wittenoom industrial catastrophe, “Blue Death”.
In 2006, Barry released a biography on Australian cricketer Shane Warne, called Spun Out. Extracts of the book were published in The Age’s Good Weekend magazine, and some of the content was controversial.
