In 1986, at the European Championships Ilg came close to winning his title. But he was beaten in the final stretch by Francesco Panetta (silver) and Hagen Melzer of the GDR (gold). In 1987, Ilg took part at his first World Championships final in Rome but was unable to win the medal.
