Patrick Gideon Wolff (born February 15th 1968) is an American Grandmaster of chess. Wolff is the son of the philosopher Robert Paul Wolff and brother of law professor Tobias Barrington Wolff. Wolff has won his place in the United States Chess Championship in the year 1992 and in 1995.
Wolff has also been the writer and editor of Complete Idiot’s Guide to Chess. He was a graduate of Harvard College in 1996, and the trophy awarded to him at the Harvard-Yale annual intercollegiate game of chess is called”the Wolff Cup in his honor since he is the sole grandmaster who participates in the event since he was a student at both of the colleges (beginning at Yale before graduating at Harvard).

In 1995, which was the same year that he took home his 2nd United States championship, Wolff was second to the challenger Viswanathan Anand as he prepared to play in an Classical World Chess Championship 1995 match against the champion Kasparov. Even though Anand was the winner at the end of nine matches, Kasparov eventually prevailed 10.5 to 7.5.
