Dearen was raised and born within Sterling City, Texas, between San Angelo and Big Spring. The father of his son, Delbert Dearen (1912-1998) as well as his mom, who was the previously known as Thyra Violet Sparkman (1918-1974) are buried in the Montvale Cemetery in Sterling City.

Patrick March Dearen (born May 1st 1951) is the author of more than 20 books about Western fiction and historical. The most recent of his works is the novel from 2012, To Hell or the Pecos is set in an undeveloped, 79-mile stretch that is part of the Butterfield Trail in the Pecos River region that is West Texas. To Hell or the Pecos is the winner for 2014 of the Elmer Kelton Book Award presented by the West Texas Historical Association.

Dearen was a graduate of 1969’s Sterling City High School, where one of his instructors had advised him in January of 1966 when he was in his first year of college to think about an occupation in writing. The year 1974 was the time he graduated with an associate’s degree in journalism at the University of Texas at Austin. Her mother, Thyra, died that same year at 56. With her help young Dearen was able to read Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Tarzan of the Apes which also contributed to his determination to become a writer. He received nine national and state prizes as reporters for two newspapers that ran daily, which included The San Angelo Standard-Times and the Midland Reporter- Telegram, of which his wife, Mary Gilda Dearen (born in c. 1955) is the editor-in-chief.

Dearen was named the runner-up in 2013 for the Will Rogers Medallion from the Academy of Western Artists for his novel To Hell or the Pecos. He has also been honored for his work by the Western Writers of America, the San Antonio Conservation Society, and the Permian Historical Association. Dearen enjoys backpacking and playing ragtime on the piano. His wife and he have one son, Wesley Joseph Dearen (born circa 1990), the first reader of his father’s books.
