Patrick Cox (born March 19 1963) is a Canadian British fashion designer with an eponymous fashion label that specializes in the design of leather goods, footwear and accessories. Cox is most well-known for the use of unconventional materials, and mixing of classic and avant-garde styles.
Cox opened his first store in 1994. Cox established his very first Parisian shop on the left bank. It was and in 1995 he added an additional shop situated in London at Sloane Street, a new store in Manhattan’s Madison Avenue and a second store in Paris on the left bank. In the course of this, Cox was twice awarded Accessory Designer of the Year at the British Fashion Awards. 1998 was the year that saw Cox relocate his design studio and production operations from to the UK to Civitanova within the Italian Marche region, a place famous for its shoe manufacturing.
Cox used to date Canadian journalist, entrepreneur, and magazine publisher Tyler Brûlé. Cox funded the launch of Brûlé’s Wallpaper magazine that was subsequently sold to Time Warner in 1997. They split up in 1997.
At the age of 19, Cox produced his first pair of shoes, for the Toronto-based designer Loucas Kleanthous, who suggested Cox consider a career as a designer. An interest in British fashion led Cox to study at Cordwainer’s Technical College, London, a design school that was absorbed into the London College of Fashion in 2000. Cox studied at Cordwainer’s from 1983 to 1985. He graduated with merit in July 1985.
In the year 1991, Cox established his first store right next to that of the Peter Jones department store in Sloane Square, Chelsea, the most well-known fashion area of London. in 1993 Cox launched his very first line specifically designed for consumers in the market for mass appeal. The collection he dubbed “Wannabe” increased the company’s semi-annual sales from 2,000 pairs to 200,000. Cox has said that he owes his initial enthusiasm for moccasins to co- designer Richard James whom had asked Cox to design with a contemporary loafer to wear at one of his early 90s fashion shows.

While an undergraduate pupil in London, Cox probably spent at least as much time in nightclubs as he did in his studies. In the course of his nightlife, Cox made friends with many prominent designers, like the famous Vivienne Westwood. This led to the fact that in 1984 Westwood was able to convince Cox to create sneakers for the “Clint Eastwood” collection. Some of the footwear Cox designed featured a four-inch platform that would eventually become the basis for the 9-inch model that was later worn by the famous model Naomi Campbell, when she famously fell at an Westwood runway show Paris, France in 1993. In his sophomore year at college, Cox created and crafted moccasins with fringed fluorescents for the renowned Body Map brand of David Holah and Stevie Stewart.
Cox established his own business designing shoes in 1985. In 1986, he created the sneakers for John Galliano’s “Fallen Angels” collection. In the following year, Cox launched his own Patrick Cox label, adopting the fleur-de-lys symbol. Cox continued to collaborate alongside Galliano over two seasons. Cox also created shoes for a variety of fashion shows of designers like Anna Sui, John Flett, Alistair Blair and Lanvin Haute Couture, to name just a few.
From his early association with Vivienne Westwood onwards, Cox developed a cult like status in Japan and in 1996 signed a 10-year licensing deal with leading Japanese luxury department store group Isetan. This deal saw the opening of more than 40 shop in shops across Japan and a whole range of licensed Japanese products including ready-to-wear, bags, jewellery and watches.
