Major General Patrick Cammaert (Dutch: [‘petrIk “‘kama’rt] born on April 11 1950 in Alkmaar) was a former Dutch general who was the United Nations Force Commander for the Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. He was also the Military Advisor to the Secretary General of the United Nations. Prior to that as the Force Commanding Officer for the United Nations Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea (UNMEE) in the capacity of the Military Adviser for the Department of Peacekeeping Operations, and was a member of the with the Royal Netherlands Marines specializing in peacekeeping operations.

In the beginning of 2016 Cammaert headed a Board of Headquarters Inquiry into the reasons behind the violence that took place at the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) security of civilians in Malakal, South Sudan, between February 17 and February 18 in 2016. In the following year the UNMISS appointed him to the post by United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to head an independent investigation into the brutality that occurred in Juba, South Sudan, in July 2016 and the response of UNMISS.

Cammaert has also been a frequent mentor for senior officers for UN senior leadership courses, as well as at Intensive training courses for the new commanders of forces. In 2015 Cammaert was a member of the High Level Advisory Group for the study of global scope regarding United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325.
