Patrialis Akbar is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on October 31, 1958 in Padang, West Sumatra, Indonesia. Patrialis Akbar (born 31 October 1958) is an advocate and politician who was a member of the Constitutional Court Justice of the Indonesian Constitutional Court for the period from 2013 until 2017 in Padang, West Sumatra. He has worked across three branches of executive, state, and judiciary power. He was an elected representative of the House of Representatives for two time periods (1999-2004 between 2004 and 2009).

In June of 2015, Akbar rejected a judicial review request by groups representing children’s rights to raise the minimum age in Indonesia for marriage of women from between 16 and 18. Akbar claimed that there was no guarantee increasing the age limit will lower the rate in divorces, health issues or social issues.

Akbar’s tenure on the Constitutional Court was ultimately cut short despite the presidential appeals that had led to his initial appointment. In January 2017, the Corruption Eradication Commission arrested Akbar and 10 other defendants in a sting operation on suspicion of corruption in an animal health law. Constitutional Chief Justice Arief Hidayat led an investigation into three justices, clearing fellow justices Manahan Sitompul and I Dewa Gede Palguna but finding enough evidence for Akbar’s dismissal.

In 2013, the former president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono attempted to make Akbar for his position on the Constitutional Court of Indonesia at the end of Achmad’s term However, his Jakarta State Administrative Court blocked Akbar’s appointment , as along with the appointment of his co-justice Maria Farida Indrati. Legal activists have cited Akbar’s lack of efficiency as a minister, as and his personal connections towards the presidency. The office of Yudhoyono appealed the decision for Akbar and Indrati which was successful. The Jakarta High Administrative Court found that the petition filed against Akbar and Indrati did not have legal standing to bring the lawsuit.

In the beginning of his career, Patrialis Akbar was city transportation driver, primarily on Pasar Senen-Jatinegara Jakarta and taxi drivers in Jakarta’s capital. After receiving an LLB degree at the University of Muhammadiyah Jakarta, it was a lawyer’s career for a time before getting into politics. Akbar was a part of the Second United Indonesia Cabinet and was the Minister for Justice and Human Rights in Indonesia from the 22nd of October, 2009 until 19 October.

On 4 September 2017, Jakarta Corruption Court sentenced Akbar to eight years in jail and fined him Rp 300 million. The court found he had accepted bribes from a beef importer in connection with a judicial review of the 2014 Animal Husbandry and Livestock Health Law. Patrialis only received US$10,000 or half of the amount of US$20,000 given [as bribes] from businessman Basuki Hariman through [middleman] Kamaluddin.
