Van Den Hauwe was born and brought up in London and was a part of Birmingham City as an apprentice in July 1977. His debut came in the First Division as a 17-year-old on October 7, 1978, when the team suffered the 2-1 defeat at home at Manchester City. He played 143 times for Birmingham across all competitions prior to moving to Everton on September 14, 1984 for a price of PS100,000.
