Pat Spillane is one of the most popular and richest Gaelic Football Player who was born on December 1, 1955 in Templenoe, County Kerry, Ireland. In Templenoe, County Kerry, Spillane entered an extended family that was steeped in Gaelic football’s history. The father of his son, Tom (1923-1964) was a player in Gaelic football for Kerry and also won the Munster award in the year 1948. Many of his the maternal aunties (his mother was born by members of the Lyne Family of Killarney’s Legion) were also able to boast of representing their counties in the game of football. The name of his mother is Maura.

Spillane also played for club football at Thomond College during his time there in the latter part of the 1970s. In 1977, he played as captain for the team which defeated Croom to win the Limerick senior championship. Thomond later played for the county at the national club championships and even made it to the final. A 0-12-to-3 defeat of the famed Nemo Rangers club gave Spillane an Munster club winner’s medal. Spillane later led his team in Croke Park to play in the All-Ireland final against St. John’s of Antrim. The Limerick club did not have a Limerick natives in the team, but the win was secured due to goals scored by Spillane as well as the Sligo’s Mick Kilcoyne. The win of 2-14-1 resulted in Spillane the All-Ireland club winner’s medal.

Spillane played competitive Gaelic football as a boarder at St Brendan’s College. Here he won back-to-back Corn Uí Mhuirí medals, however, an All- Ireland medal remained elusive. Spillane first appeared for the Templenoe club at underage levels, before winning a county novice championship medal in 1973. With the amalgamated Kenmare District team he won two county senior championship medals in 1974 and 1987. While studying at Thomond College Spillane won an All-Ireland medal in the club championship in 1978. He also won one Munster medal and a county senior championship medal in Limerick.

Spillane made his senior inter-county debut as a substitute in a National Football League game against Galway in March 1974. He lined out in the drawn National League final that year; however, he did not start the replay which Kerry won. Spillane retained his place as a substitute for Kerry’s unsuccessful Munster Championship campaign.

In the early 1970s Spillane was part of the Kerry minor team of football but he was little success at this level because Cork won this championship. Spillane quickly made it to the Kerry under-21 team , where they won the Munster title in 1975 after a nine-point defeat to Waterford. Spillane’s team was later selected to play in the All-Ireland final, with Dublin playing as an opponent. A 1-15-to-0-10 score line handed Kerry the victory , and awarded Spillane the All-Ireland winners’ trophy.
