He was sacked of his administrative duties on the 22nd December 2009, after Udinese did not perform well in the opening second half of the 2009-10 season and was substituted with Gianni De Biasi. He was reinstated in charge of Udinese on the 21st of February, 2010, following the news that De Biasi’s dismissal because of poor performance.
He then accepted an offer to become new head coach of Serie B promotion hopefuls Pescara for the 2013–14 season, but was dismissed later throughout the season due to poor results.
Marino returned into management on 30 October 2014, taking over from Giovanni Lopez at Vicenza, still in Serie B.
He joined Catania in 2005. was appointed the coach of Catania during his debut season with the rossoblu team, Marino returned the team in Serie A after over 20 years. He also was the coach of Catania during its 2006-2007 Serie A campaign. After an impressive start that saw Catania to the top of position in the table, Catania experienced a negative run following the riots of the Sicilian derby, which resulted in the loss of a policeman. This led to Catania’s Catania home stadium being banned for the remainder period. After Catania secured a win on the final matchday thanks to an 1-0 win over Chievo, one of the teams in relegation Chievo, Marino announced he was leaving his position. The following day, he signed a contract for four years with Udinese. When speaking to SkyItalia during the post-match interview Marino did not hide his disappointment after the poor performance of his team against bottom- placed Reggina. “We were awful this afternoon, and despite having a numerical advantage, it seemed as if we were the team playing in nine men,” declared Marino. “I find myself deeply dissatisfied with the performance despite the good outcome. I was certainly not expecting this kind of performance from my team today, since I’m expecting everybody to be at their best when they put on their Zebrette uniform.”

In his career as a player, began with his club, Marsala, Marino never played in higher divisions than Serie C1, and ended his playing career with Catania in 1996-97.
His coaching career started in 1997-98 with Serie D team Milazzo, where he was close to winning the league in his first season but ended up finishing in second. But his breakthrough occurred at Paterno where he was the leader through two consecutive promotions to Serie D to Serie C1. He was then signed to Serie C2 Foggia, which resulted in the immediate Serie C1 promotion. It was his Serie B debut in 2004-05 with Arezzo and was replaced by Mario Somma. In the second half of the season, he was fired and later replaced with Marco Tardelli, he was repeatedly recalled as the captain of the team. The team finished with 14th position.
In June 2010 he was appointed new head coach of Parma, replacing Francesco Guidolin. On 3 April 2011 Marino, after the home defeat with Bari was sacked. On 22 December 2011, he was appointed the new head coach of Genoa to replace Alberto Malesani who was sacked after a disastrous 1–6 away defeat against Napoli. Marino’s tenure as Genoa coach however turned out to be rather disappointing, as he did not manage to bring the team back into the fight for a European competition spot and instead left it close to the relegation zone; he was ultimately dismissed on 2 April 2012 after a 4–5 loss to Inter, and replaced by his predecessor Alberto Malesani.
