Parnell Dickinson (born on March 14 1953) is an ex- American football player who was a part of the National Football League (NFL) for a single season. Through his entire career, he appeared in eight games with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, completed 15 of 39 passes, gaining 220 yards, scored five interceptions and one touchdown and concluded the season with a passer’s score of 25.5.

A four-year quarterback who started in the football program at Mississippi Valley State University, Dickinson was selected by the Buccaneers in the seventh round of the 1976 NFL Draft. He played as the backup quarterback for Steve Spurrier his rookie season and played during eight matches, with one game with Miami Dolphins. Miami Dolphins. His season ended when he suffered an injury during an opponent game with the Cleveland Browns. He was able to recover of the injury, and attempted to join his way onto the squad in the year 1977 but was dropped, ending his playing career. After retirement, he became an offensive coordinator at a high school in Tampa.

In 1978, Dickinson signed with the New England Patriots. Their quarterback situation was set, and in order to make his way onto an NFL roster, he joined the team as a wide receiver. He was released from the team a month later, and ended his career with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League.

After retiring from football, Dickinson became an insurance salesman and opened two daycare centers. He also became offensive coordinator at Tampa Catholic High School in the 1980s after being recruited by fellow Buccaneer Dave Lewis. In 1992, Dickinson became an inaugural member of the Southwestern Athletic Conference Hall of Fame.

After graduation from the school, Dickinson was selected by the expansion Tampa Bay Buccaneers with the number 183rd at the 7th pick of the NFL Draft. Buccaneers chief coach John McKay said that Dickinson was regarded as the second-best player on his draft board , behind Richard Todd. Steve Spurrier had the starting job done after he was signed by the team. As the result Dickinson had to compete for a backup quarterback position along with Bill Cappleman and James Foote. Dickinson began training camp throwing the toughest passes of all four quarterbacks and also had few issues with his accuracy during the procedure. Dickinson was the second-string quarterback for the entire preseason. In an encounter with his former team, the Green Bay Packers, he played his team the Buccaneers towards their very first score as an entire team. After the preseason ended his spot in the team’s roster was confirmed following Spurrier and Foote, who were cut. Dickinson played football in college during his time at Mississippi Valley State. He was quarterback for the team in his first year of college in 1972. The season’s highlights included one game against his team the Southern Jaguars where he completed 15 of 31 passes for 180 yards, and ran to score two scores in a win of 23-13. In the final game of the year, Dickinson received a spot on the National Association for Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) all-star quarterback team along with Ralph Brock. The year he was a freshman, Dickinson was awarded the best sportsman award for the team that is awarded to the player with the highest character and attitude.

In 1974, in his junior year, Dickinson threw for 1,667 yards and 21 touchdowns during the time throughout the entire season. In his initial three seasons he was the top quarterback in his team in the Southwestern Athletic Conference with total offense. Dickinson’s senior year’s performance included a comeback victory against Prairie View A&M, when the quarterback threw a touchdown pass in the nick of an hour remaining to win the game 27-26, after having been losing 26-14 with less than four minutes remaining. Following the season’s conclusion and he was named on the Black College All-American football team for the second time in consecutive years.

Dickinson went through knee surgery during the offseason, but there was still concern about whether he had a future in the NFL. That was set aside when he was considered to be progressing well in his recovery as of early July 1977. During the Buccaneers’ offseason, the quarterbacks on the roster changed entirely, with Dickinson being the only holdover; Gary Huff was now the starter, and Dickinson was fighting for a backup role alongside Mike Boryla and Randy Hedberg. After the Buccaneers lost Boryla and Huff to injuries, the former for the season, Dickinson ended up being the starting quarterback for the team’s final preseason game against the Bills. In the game, Dickinson completed 2 of 12 passes for -2 yards and was sacked three times in a 17–6 loss. A week after the game against the Bills, Dickinson was released by the Buccaneers along with four other players. The Buccaneers re-signed him after Huff got injured in late October, but Dickinson was again released a couple weeks later.
